Galciers

How did i become Student of Glacier.

I grownup in the north Glaciated part of Pakistan in the central Karakoram “Skardu”. Since childhood I was surrounded by the nature and inspired by the nature and processes. I first developed an interest in glaciers and climate change issues when I was admitted in University. I was fascinated by glacial environments, not only due to their sensitivity to changing climate but their importance for the availability of fresh water as in the north these flowing ice masses are only primary source of fresh water. To do work on glaciers is not as easy I had imagined at all. It’s huge as Baltoro Glacier extended to 604 km2, covered with a lot of debris load and crevasses. It was amazing and full of adventure to climb on glacier. It was this experience that really developed my interest in glacier studies, and their altering behavior with changing climate inspired me to know the processes.

Importance

It’s very important to have a knowledge of these flowing ice masses because, Glaciers of Hindukush Karakorum and Himalaya are the primary source of fresh water for downstream population. Glacier ice is sensitive to the meteorological variables that’s why glaciers are termed as sensitive indicator of global, regional and local climate change. More than 50% of water in Indus River is directly contributed by snow and ice melt from high mountains. Changes in the climate can affect the quantity of water in rivers so now it is very important to study Glacier dynamics for the sustainable use of these available water resources.
